Safeguarding Policy

Introduction

Patriotic Citizens Initiative (PCI) is committed to safeguarding the welfare and rights of all individuals who come into contact with our organization, particularly vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those at risk of exploitation or abuse. We have zero tolerance for abuse, exploitation, or harm in any form.

Scope

This policy applies to all PCI staff, volunteers, and any individual or group that interacts with PCI, both online and offline, including our beneficiaries and the broader community.

Our Safeguarding Commitments

  • Prevention: PCI is committed to preventing any harm, abuse, or exploitation by ensuring appropriate training, implementing robust safeguarding policies, and conducting background checks on volunteers and staff.
     

  • Reporting: All suspected safeguarding concerns, abuse, or misconduct must be reported to PCI’s Safeguarding Officer via [Your NGO's Email]. Reports can be made confidentially and will be handled with sensitivity and professionalism.
     

  • Investigation: PCI will promptly investigate all safeguarding concerns following established procedures and may involve relevant authorities where necessary.
     

  • Support: PCI will provide appropriate support to those who have experienced abuse or harm, including referrals to specialized services, legal advice, or medical assistance.
     

Government and Regulatory Agencies for Safeguarding

  • National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP): This Nigerian government agency is dedicated to preventing human trafficking, child exploitation, and abuse.

  • Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development (Nigeria): This government body is responsible for child protection and ensuring the welfare of vulnerable populations.

  • United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF): UNICEF provides global resources on child protection and the safeguarding of vulnerable individuals.

Safeguarding Support Services and Further Information

  • International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR): Provides investigative resources related to the protection of vulnerable individuals in Nigeria.

Reporting and Seeking Help

If you suspect that someone is in immediate danger or is a victim of abuse, neglect, or exploitation, please report your concerns directly to PCI’s Safeguarding Officer or the following agencies:

In the event of an emergency or if a crime is suspected, you are encouraged to contact local law enforcement authorities for immediate assistance.

PCI’s Safeguarding Procedures

  • Risk Assessment: PCI conducts regular risk assessments to identify and mitigate any potential safeguarding risks in our activities and partnerships.
     

  • Training: PCI staff and volunteers undergo regular safeguarding training to ensure they understand their responsibilities and how to identify and respond to potential safeguarding concerns.
     

  • Monitoring: PCI regularly monitors its safeguarding practices and makes improvements as necessary, ensuring compliance with Nigerian safeguarding laws and international standards.
     

Safeguarding Compliance

PCI is committed to full compliance with Nigerian child protection and safeguarding laws, including the Child Rights Act of 2003 and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015, as well as international standards set by organizations such as UNICEF and the United Nations.
 

PCI believes in creating a safe environment for all, where everyone can participate in our initiatives free from fear, abuse, or harm.
